Coatlicue Aztec Goddess

​Coatlicue was a powerful and complex deity in Aztec mythology, deeply revered and feared by the people. Her name means "She of the Serpent Skirt," and she was a mother goddess associated with earth, fertility, death, and rebirth. To the Aztecs, Coatlicue represented the cyclical nature of life and death. She was not a gentle maternal figure—rather, she embodied both creation and destruction, much like the earth itself, which gives life through crops but also takes life through natural disasters. Her worship reflected the Aztecs' understanding of the harsh and dualistic forces of the universe.

Mother of Gods: Coatlicue conceived Huitzilopochtli miraculously when a feather fell into her bosom. This angered her other children, who plotted to kill her for dishonoring them. But Huitzilopochtli was born fully armed and defeated them, especially Coyolxauhqui, whom he dismembered—symbolizing the triumph of the sun over the moon and stars.

Symbol of Fertility and Earth: She was often seen as the earth itself, both life-giving and deadly. Her fierce image represents how the earth nurtures but also consumes all life. Fearsome Appearance: Her statue is one of the most iconic in Aztec art—she wears a skirt of entwined snakes, a necklace of human hands, hearts, and skulls, and her feet and hands are clawed, symbolizing her ability to take life.

Duality and Balance: She embodied the Aztec concept of duality—life and death, creation and destruction, love and terror—all necessary for the cosmic order. Coatlicue was a foundational goddess in Aztec religion—creator, destroyer, and mother of gods. Her terrifying form reminded the Aztecs of the power and unpredictability of nature, the cycle of life and death, and the importance of sacrifice to maintain balance in the universe.
