Isis (also spelled Aset or Eset) is one of the most important goddesses in ancient Egyptian mythology. Though sometimes referred to as a “queen,” she was not a mortal queen like Cleopatra or Nefertiti, but rather a divine queen, often called the “Queen of the Gods.” She played a central role in Egyptian religion and later in Greco-Roman traditions.
Isis was revered as the goddess of magic, healing, and wisdom.
She possessed great magical powers, especially used to protect the living and raise the dead (as she did with Osiris).
Her magical abilities made her one of the most powerful deities in the Egyptian pantheon.
She was the wife and sister of Osiris, the god of the underworld.
After Osiris was murdered and dismembered by his brother Seth, Isis searched for and reassembled his body.
She used her magic to resurrect Osiris long enough to conceive their son, Horus.
Often depicted wearing a throne-shaped crown, symbolizing her role as the seat of royal power.
Seen as a protector of pharaohs, linking divine rule to the human king.
Her status elevated during the New Kingdom and into Greco-Roman times, when she was sometimes merged with other goddesses.
Isis was invoked for protection in life and in death.
She was often shown in funerary texts spreading her wings to protect the deceased.
One of the “Weeping Goddesses” mourning Osiris, she symbolized grief but also hope and rebirth.
